Rossmore Notes (Updated 01/09/10)
Credit Union Shield
A fine turnout for this event, which was aided by a number of societies who were also playing over the weekend. The winner was Mauice Smyth who has been absent from the winners enclosure for some time, congratulations and well done Maurice, nice to see you back competing and a fine score of 41points to boot. Runner up was Brendan Beggan with 40points who had the misfortune of being second twice over the weekend, but your playing well Ben and the handicap is back into single figures “look on the Brightside J”. Third was Pat Walsh with 39points and the gross went to the usual suspect Ronnie Berry 31points.
Open Thursday
A new winner of the Open Thursday, former GAA county star Gerry Moen, now making a name for himself on the fairways of Rossmore with a super 43points. Collins Claims Presidents Prize (Updated 25/08/10)
Tommy Collins produced the goods once again this year and fired a superb 65 to capture the President’s Medal and put himself in prime position to capture the golfer of the year title. Tommy has played excellent golf this year but has certainly reserved his best for the Golfer Of The Year events and has now two wins to his credit. Runner up and just beaten on a countback was Gerry Hughes who also shot a 65, Gerry had seconditis this weekend as he was also second in his other favourite past time a fishing competition. Well done Gerry I’m sure the win is very close in both spheres. Third was Hugh Coll who shot a superb 66 to put himself back in the winners enclosure and indeed could have forced a further countback had he not three putted the eighteenth. Hugh, no doubt will alter his own handicap this week to add to the letters he has posted lately.
Ladies section
The ladies section was also a very close encounter where Noleen O’ Gorman carded an excellent 71 in very windy conditions on Friday to capture the medal she had longed for. During her acceptance speech Noleen made reference to the fact she was one of the original committee who were instrumental in the introduction of the medal and that she was now the only one in her household to have a presidents medal so it’s over to you now Barry for 2011. Runner up was the ultra consistent Bernie Mc Cague who also shot a 71 and was just pipped on the countback. Well done Bernie. Third with a 72 was Patricia Sullivan another regular in the winners enclosure.
Gross Prizes
The mens and ladies gross went to the most consistent man and woman in Rossmore, Ronnie Berry 72 and Dorren O’ Grady 82. Congratulations to both of them and just another word of praise to R.Berry for his excellent efforts in Murvagh golf club where he was just beaten by Gareth mc Gimpsey for the Ulster Seniors Title. I’m told by experts in the golfing world that Ronnies two over par in horrendous conditions last Friday was nothing short of miraculous. Well done Ronnie once again for flying the Rossmore flag so proudly.
Juvenile and Junior Sections
The novice event went to Eimear Mc Nally. The juvenile went to another budding Fanning, Jamie Fanning, The junior 14’s+ went to the ever improving Mark Stirrat. The Junior -14 went to the ultra consistent Myles Dwyer. Well done to all.
Congratulations to President Chris and his wife Murial on their big day and sincere best wishes for the rest of the year a sentiment echoed by the honourable secretary in his introduction and by all the prizewinners on the night. Chris welcomed everybody to Rossmore Golf Club and thanked all the staff of Rossmore for making it special on his big day. When the presentations were complete we were treated to music and dance and a great night was had by all. So Congratulations Mr President, well done.

Open Weekend (Updated 11/08/10)
Another very successful Open Weekend with a large number of visitors and members taking part, indeed it was a close call for the number 1 spot with the win going to Paul McQuaid on count back from TrevAnother or Turnbull from Lurgan both with 42 points. Congratulations to Paul on shooting such a fine score on a course playing its full length with difficult rough to contend with. Third was the ex-officio Willie Cullen who shot an excellent 41 points and is surely heading for single figures. I am sure that a sedate pace suits Willie. The gross went to the irrepressible Ronnie Berry with 38 points.
Open Thursday
The winner last week was the ever improving Kyle Breakey, who shot a fantastic 44 points, and won by a single point from Daniel McCrossan (43 points), third was committee man Liam Treanor, 39 points, and the gross was won by the ultra consistent Ciaran Lavery with 36 points. Kyle is surely heading for single figures and the next fortnight should see him achieve his dream of a single figure handicap.
Rossmore Cup Day
Sunday 15th August sees the eagerly awaited Rossmore Cup Final Day when the remaining Ladies and Gents Junior and Senior finals will all take place on the one day. This is a new idea playing all on the one day and should ensure a large crowd and a brilliant atmosphere.
The Men’s Rossmore Senior sees last year’s winner Jim Keogh, the favourite for the event; take on low handicapper Sean Moyna. There is a big handicap difference between the pair and could be decisive in helping Jim retain his title. Sean reached the same final a few years ago and would dearly love to see his name on the trophy, but best wishes to both parties. The Men’s Junior final has not been decided before this went to print but is between Ciaran Haran who will meet the winner of Packie Murphy and Kenny Breakey.
Best wishes to all the Ladies in their finals.
Please note that the presentations will take place to all the prize winners on Sunday night and please look at the notice board for the exact starting time, there is entertainment on offer this evening with a courtesy bus available. The final draw for the overall winner of the very successful Club Draw will also take place on Sunday prior to the presentations.
Treanor Storms Through To Claim Captains Prize
A bumper crowd, fine weather, the course in magnificent shape, a great winner, what more can be said about Captains Day in Rossmore only “FANTASTIC”. Well done team Nugent. Firstly just a few words of thanks to Captain Michael Nugent and his family for the wonderful effort that was put in to make this a truely memorable event, but enough of that this is how the story unfolded.
Friday 30th:
The scores on this afternoon were ticking along nicely but with no course records being set, and looking likely that a 67 might lead when the Leitrim legend Bernard Gilbane signed for a 66 and this kick started the event. Not to be outdone, up steps the first of the Ballinode challangers Seamus Deery who fired a magnificent 65 and held the over night lead.
Saturday 31st:
And you could feel the excitement in the air. I had a nervous spin from Donegal myself and thought this could be my time and produced the goods for a 66, my travels were short when I heard a plane had arrived from America carrying a gun slinger by the name of Connolly and he was teaming up with three amigos in the last group out and what a score he produced to set the place alight with a brilliant 64 and carried the bookie PC to a 66 who hadn’t even backed himself.
Sunday 1st:
Sunday morning August the 1st, you could cut the tension with a knife and what a morning it turned out to be. J.J Mc Gettigan roared into contention with 66 to add to his impressive first 67, Alan Finnegan headed towards the top of the leader board with another 66 to add to his first score of 66, but man of the moment Sean Treanor spread eagled the field with a round of the year performance an incredible 60.
The final nine: It was thought by many to be a victory parade for Sean but things don’t always go to script and the pressure exerted by JJ, Terry and Alan kept us guessing till the final putt dropped and Sean Treanor was victorious for the first time in Captains Prize, a worthy winner he was. He had been in the last eighteen a number of times and kept plugging away and got his just rewards, well done Sean. Congratulations to everybody who contested the final nine, especially these guys who didn’t make the prizes, Des Kinsella Pauric Reilly Eddie Whellan James Corrigan Bernard Gilbane John HahasseyPaddy Murray
The presentation took place in the Clubhouse after the event and what a night was had by all especially the Keady contingent. The speeches by the winners were magnificent and full of praise for the Captain, the green staff, the bar and restaurant staff and Rossmore Golf Club was the big winner on the night. Congratulations to everybody who took part, and finally congratulations to Ronnie Berry who won the gross once again playing in his 44th Captains Weekend.

Sleator Cup
A great turnout for this prestigious event the J.Sleator Cup (GOY) and what a deserving winner we had in Paul Ward who played superbly and returned a magnificent 67. One of his playing partners Pat Walshe was in the winners enclosure lately, so if your looking for a good draw for Captains prize watch out for those two names. The runner up was Declan Murphy 68 who really is lighting the place up at the moment and playing some great golf. Third was J.Murray 68 one of my tips for Captains prize. The gross was won by Ronnie Berry 71 and the second gross was claimed by J.Morgan 76. The junior prize won by a young man who is now a regular in the winners circle who shot a fantastic 67 well done Kyle Breakey.
Rossmore Cups
Both the senior and junior events have reached the quarter final stage and your guess is as good as mine as to who the winner will be. I do see a number of past winners lurking and getting themselves set. Best wishes to everybody.
Team NewsThere are still a number of Rossmore teams going well in competitions namely the Ulster Fourball, Sam Rutherford and Howell Cup teams, so keep it going lads. Congratulations to the Ronan Rafferty team who qualified for the semi finals with a one hole victory over Warren Point.

Monaghan Bottlers sponsored singles stableford Saturday 3-7-2010
What a start to open week with the Monaghan Bottlers sponsored singles stableford event attracting a huge crowd of members and visitors. The winner of this event was none other than Steven Curley with the fine score of 40pts. It was great to see this man back in the winners enclosure after enduring some tough times on the golf course, but he dug in and has got his reward. Steven was very gracious at the presentation and said his front nine score usually was his 18 hole total, so once again well done Steven. Runner up was young gun Myles Dwyer also on 40pts. This young man has a brilliant swing and is sure to go on to greater things on the golf course. Third on this occasion was Ronnie Kane on 40pts, who got a rousing reception from his usual fourball, who reckon Ronnie is peaking for Captains Prize. The gross went to the irrepressible Ronnie Berry with 34pts. Presenting the prizes Captain Michael Nugent emphasied the importance of our sponsors and the willingness of these sponsors who support Rossmore Golf Club year on year, we could not continue without your generosity, once again thank you.

Captains Prize
The talk is now of the Captains Prize and the likely winners. The bookies boards and secret whispers of who is playing well and what their handicap is leaves my mind racing as to who maybe the likely winner. I’ll come back to that next week.

Credit Union Scratch Cups (updated 23/06/10)

Open Thursday (17/06/10)
Somebody asked me had the Open Thursday changed to a 27 hole competition? im afraid not, but one could be forgiven for thinking that after S.Mc Govern accumulated the magnificent score of 48pts. Congrats Sean, Big Ben wondered where it all went wrong in Donegal. Runner up with 41pts was Oliver Clerkin who may have presumed his moment had come. Third was Phil Mickelson look-a-like Martin Mc Kenna 39pts who is really finding his form of late. The gross went to Mr consistency Ciaran Lavery 38pts.

Congratulations to Liam Treanor and Sean Mc Govern on capturing this doubles title, commiserations to beaten finalists the Murray Brothers. Speaking to both teams after the event they all agreed it was a great game and that putting was the difference between the two teams.
Connolly Set Tone For Weekend With Keady Cup Win
Bernard Connolly set the tone for the weekend when he captured the Keady Cup on Saturday with a fine 65 to ensure the first of Monaghans weekend wins. Playing with his usual fourball and with pride and bragging rights at stake and no little banter on the sixteenth regarding his handicap, Bernard maintained his composure to claim his first GOY event of 2010. Sponsored by the Keady Golf Society this is now one of Rossmores premier events and this was reflected by the large turnout over the two days. Runner up was long distance member Colm Buggy who played superbly throughout his round and it’s great to see a long distance member in the winners enclosure.
